This is such a unique tool for fine artists, calligraphers, art journalers, watercolorists, writers, mixed media aficionados, fiber artists, doodlers, scribblers, mark-makers, scrapbookers, and crafters of all types!
Handcrafted in my studio from all natural products, including wild black walnut husks and shells harvested in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina, these inks are created with distilled water and white vinegar, and once strained, alcohol and doTERRA™ clove bud essential oils added as preservatives.
These inks are water and alcohol-based, semi-permanent when dry, and can be used as a stain on porous surfaces such as paper, natural fibers, and wood. Heat-setting with a craft tool or other drying tool, and then sealing with a matte medium or varnish (and allowing to completely dry) will waterproof the surface for further layers in mixed media work or wood/ceramic finishes.
The color is a rich umber brown with just a hint of blackish-grey from the black walnut “skin.” The color hand-painted on the label is one of the paler (light-handed) shades. These inks will go very dark, depending upon your technique, and layer very well to create deep, yummy hues.
The bottles are amber glass, and available in convenient 2 oz. spray bottles, 1-oz regular top or 2 oz. gold-topped dropper bottles, and a new 4 oz refill size, for easy use in ink wells, palettes, craft sheets, wax paper, artist films and more. They can be applied with watercolour or acrylic brushes, natural fiber markmaking tools, as a spray, or using direct-to-paper techniques. There is an individual product page with pricing for each size and bottle option.
And the 4 oz. Refill size comes with a handy mini-funnel perfect for keeping spillage to a bare minimum. It does not have a spray top or glass dropper.
See the Black Walnut Ink page (click here) for photos and videos showing ways to use the inks in your creative process!
So fun to use, and I’d love to see your creations…be sure to hit me up on social media with pictures! xoxo
